This is the new Peugeot 508, said to be the first Peugeot to introduce the new design look spun from the SR1 concept first seen back in January 2010. The 508 replaces two cars – the 407 and 607 – and will be available in both saloon and estate bodystyles when it goes on sale at the start of 2011.

Engine options include a pair of turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engines with either 120 or 156bhp. They’re mated to either a conventional six-speed manual gearbox, or one of two automatic choices. The first is an automated manual, the other a conventional automatic. Both offer the driver the option to take control over gear selection via paddle-shifters.

Trim levels range from the entry-level Access – which features the basics including air conditioning – through SR, Active, Allure and GT. Of them, SR looks to offer the best proposition, as it’s aimed at the volume fleet market and comes with alloy wheels, cruise control, satnav with Bluetooth and all the safety equipment you could ask for.

Climb up the range and you’ll find an automatic electric parking brake, auto headlamps and wipers, a starter button and other luxury equipment like heated, electrically adjusted leather seats.
