Alejandrino, Sanchez named PRISAA athletics MVPs
Benjamin Alenjandrino of the University of Santo Tomas and Blessie Mae Sanchez of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation in San Carlos, Pangasinan were crowned as the PRISAA National Games most valuable players in athletics.
Alejandrino won his second straight MVP title after winning the men’s 800 and 1,500-meter runs, and 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Metro Naga Sports Complex in Naga City. He also helped the NCR 4 x 800m relay team win the gold.
The UST player bagged the title despite the fact that Region 7’s Fran Lindely Navaja also swept his five events, the last of which was the 4 x 200 relay on Friday.
Navaja, an engineering student at the University of Cebu, proved that he is the competition’s fastest man by winning the 100 and 200 meter dash, and was also part of the 4 x 100 and classic relay teams that won the gold.
However, the honor went to Alejandrino because he has more medals in individual events.
Sanchez, who is from Mabalacat, Pampanga but studies in Pangasinan, was chosen the women’s division MVP after anchoring her team to victory in the 4 x 200m relay. The 19-year-old lass also won the 400m run, 4 x 400m and classic relays, and posted silver medal finishes in the 200m run, and 4 x 100m and 4 x 800m relays.
Sanchez defeated Region 6’s Hanny Jean Delfin for the honor. Delfin likewise topped the 3,000, 5,000 and10,000m runs, and the 4 x 800m relay.
“I trained hard for six months, which accounts for my strong performance," said Sanchez, who had a forgettable rookie stint in last year’s PRISAA Nationals held in Zamboanga.
