Ai-Ai, Paolo Contis win in 24th Star Awards for Movies
Friday, 04 July 2008
THE Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) held last Friday the 24th Star Awards for Movies award-giving ceremony at Henry Lee Irwin Theater of the Ateneo de Manila University.

Ai-Ai delas Alas outshone her co-nominees Maricel Soriano, Lorna Tolentino, Judy Ann Santos, Bea Alonzo, and Cherry Pie Picache by winning the Movie Actress of the Year for the movie "Ang Cute Ng Ina Mo."
In her speech, the comedy queen said she could not believe she won the award. She said all her contenders had "crying scenes," while she only had a scene where she fell from a stairway. Ai-Ai shared her awards with her co-nominees. She thanked God for the blessings despite the present controversy (James-Kris tiff) she is facing today.

Meanwhile, Paolo Contis gleefully accepted his first Movie Actor of the Year trophy for the movie "Banal."

Paolo thanked the two actors who rejected the role because "he would not have won the award had they accepted the role."

The actor's strong contender for the title, John Lloyd Cruz, was also present as he was declared the Star of the Night for men. Ryan Eigenmann, who also vied for the award for his performance in "Baliw", was also there.

John Lloyd Cruz and Ryan Eigenmann, for his performance in "Baliw," were the other nominees for best actor.

John Lloyd was declared the Star of the Night for men.

Piolo Pascual was hosted the event. Although he failed to win the best actor, he won the hearts of one of the event's sponsors honoring him as the "Celebrity Fab of the Night."

Over 25 categories were competed for 24th Star Awards for Movies, 16 categories for the mainstream movies and nine for the digital films.

There were also two special awards given by the PMPC for the Darling of the Press won by Regine Velasquez and the Ulirang Artista Awardee (Lifetime Achievement Award) presented to the late junior action star Rudy Fernandez.

Marie Fernandez, Rudy's elder sister, accepted the award for the late actor.

Four awards were bagged by the movie "One More Chance" produced by Star Cinema. It include: Movie of the Year (Star Cinema); Movie Cinematographer of the Year for Manuel Teehankee; Movie Editor of the Year for Marya Ignacio; and the first recognition award received by Cathy Garcia Molina as the Movie Director of the Year.

Direk Cathy trembled while she thanked all her production teams and mentors for the success of "One More Chance."

Comedy actress Eugene Domingo proved that she is one of the best actresses in the movie industry today as she won Movie Supporting Actress of the Year for her performance on digital film "Pisay."

She recently won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the same movie given by Entertainment Press Society, Inc.

Eugene did not fail to entertain the audience when she received her trophy by delivering her long-comical yet meaningful speech. The hunk Piolo Pascual escorted her on the stage.

Emilio Garcia won the Movie Supporting Actor of the Year for the movie "Selda." Emilio said he had a taping that night but his excuse was worthwhile as he ended the night with an honor, which he will cherish in his entire life in show business.

Lovi Poe was chosen as New Movie Actress of the Year for the movie "Shake, Rattle & Roll 9" while Matt Evans was the New Movie Actor of the Year for the same movie.

Among the child performers, Nash Aguas became the press' apple of the eye as he bagged Movie Child Performer of the Year for the flick "Angels."
