Jinggoy in, Bong out of 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival
Wednesday, 09 July 2008
The screening and selection committee of the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival Philippines has released the list of films that made it into the official list of festival entries.

According to Julie Borja, chairperson of the executive committee, they chose the eight films in the  final line-up from among scripts submitted to them by various movie companies.

Unlike in the previous years when the screening of festival entries was divided into two batches seven films to be shown in December and three remaining films in January the MMFFP will screen the eight official entries beginning December 25. “Makakabuti rin ito sa resulta ng box-office. (This will favor the box-office results),” said Atty. Espiridion Laxa. In his analysis, Laxa explained that fewer MMFFP entries allowed greater distribution of moviegoers among cinemas screening the entries.

Good friends and fellow senator-actors Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada aren’t competing for box-office receips and awards this time, because only Estrada has an entry for the MMFFP,  Maverick Films’ “Magkaibigan” written and directed by Jose Javier Reyes.

“Pero kahit wala akong entry, parang meron na rin, kasi, kasali ang kaibigan kong si Jinggoy Estrada. Sana , manalo siya ulit ng best actor. (Even if I don’t have an entry, it seems I also have because my friend Jinggoy Estrada has a movie entered in this year’s contest. I hope he wins the best actor award again the best actor award),” said Revilla.

In the 2007 MMFFP, Estrada won for his performance as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who suffers the apathy of children because of their long separation in Maverick Films’ “Katas Ng Saudi”; he won over Revilla, who played a warrior in the futuristic Imus Productions’ movie, “Resiklo.”

Aside from “Magkaibigan,” here are the other 2008 MMFFP entries:

Cutting Edge Productions’ “Dayo” written by Artemio Abad, Jr. and Eric Cabatug directed by Robert Quilao. This the very first full-length animation film entertained by MMFFP.

Viva Communications’ “Baler” scripted by Roy Iglesias and directed by Mark Meily.

Regal Entertainment’s “Desperadas 2” penned by Roy Iglesias and megged by Joel Lamangan and “Shake, Rattle and Roll X” written by Ellen Estrada, Cheryl Narvasa, Fenny Tuviera and Fairlane Raymundo directed by Michael Tuviera and Topel Lee.

Canary Films’ “One Night Only” scripted and directed by Jose Javier Reyes.

OctoArts Films’ “Escalera and Ungasis (20 Years After)” written by Isabel de Rosa and Tony Reyes directed by Antonio Reyes and Star Cinema’s “Tanging Ina Nyong Lahat” written by Mel Mendoza-del Rosario and megged by Wenn Deramas.

Although the stars to play in the movies weren’t indicated, one can presume that Tito Sotto, Joey de Leon and Vic Sotto star in “Escaleras…” Ai Ai de las Alas in “Tanging Ina…” and the original cast of “Desperadas” namely Ruffa Gutierrez, Rufa Mae Quinto, Iza Calzado and Marian Rivera.
