“Hancock” grosses P45.48-M, opens at No. 1 in RP
Thursday, 10 July 2008
The Philippines welcomed with open arms a brand new superhero that’s originally conceived for the big screen (and not based from comic books), as Will Smith’s action-adventure “Hancock” opened at No. 1, grossing a high-flying P45.48-million four-day opening weekend nationwide (July 3 to 6) in only 137 screens. This was announced by Victor R. Cabrera, general manager of Columbia Pictures, which distributed the film.

In Mega Manila, “Hancock” grossed a staggering P36.21-million, the all-time biggest opening for a Will Smith film, surpassing 1996’s “Independence Day” at P35-million, and last January’s “I Am Legend” at P31.58-million.

“Hancock” also posted Columbia’s highest opening for the year (beating last February’s “Vantage Point”). The Top 20 cinemas that generated the biggest grosses for “Hancock” are Trinoma (P2.37-M), Glorietta (P2.34-M), SM Mall of Asia (P2.26-M), SM Megamall (P1,78-M), SM North EDSA (P1.61-M), Gateway Cineplex (P1.51-M), Greenbelt III (P1.49-M), Power Plant (P1.43-M), Greenhills Theatre (P1.40-M) and Alabang Town Center (P1.33-M).

Completing the list are Robinsons Ermita (P1.26-M), Shangri-la Cineplex (P1.08-M), Eastwood Cinema (P1.06-M), Festival Mall (P1.021-M), Robinsons Galleria (P1.020-M), SM Cebu (P 924,200), Ayala Cebu (P 855,866), SM San Lazaro (P798,128), SM Manila (P794,812)and Sta. Lucia East (P772,6500).

In the U.S., Will Smith likewise took home the gold medal at the box office with his superhero-with-an-attitude actioner, opening with a whopping $66M over the July 4 to 6 period and a solid $107.3M since its launch on night of July 1 with previews beginning at 7pm.

“Hancock” tells the story of a tortured superhero who crash-lands in Los Angeles, causing chaos in the city. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock's well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock's greatest challenge yet and a task that may prove impossible as Ray's wife, Mary (Charlize Theron) insists that he's a lost cause.

Still playing across the Philippines, “Hancock” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
