The buzz going around the Cultural Center of the Philippines, mostly from journalists, reviewers and critics, as well as Cinemalaya and CCP staff, identified three films that are major contenders for the biggest honors in the ongoing 2008 Cinemalaya indie filmfest. "100", a film about a young, single, beautiful and sexy career woman who receives news she has terminal cancer, is now a favorite. This Chris Martinez-helmed piece left many members of the audience in tears, but it's not simply the subject matter but the manner in which an old subject is tackled that makes this film compelling. The buzz is that Mylene Dizon is the actress to beat in this year's Cinemalaya."Boses", which stars 9-year-old acting newbie Julian Duque, is about how an abused, scarred and traumatized child musical prodigy finds salvation and peace through his violin-playing. Critics were wowed by Duque's performance. "Concerto", is based on true stories about a concert held in the forests of the Davao mountains towards the end of the Second World War in the Philippines. A displaced Filipino family finds a group of Japanese officers. The film explores how music brings together the two camps and the results of their encounter in the jungle. Cinemalaya jurors are still in deliberations to pick the festival's winners. The 2008 Cinemalaya Awards Night is set for Sunday, 7:30 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
