Who will be this year’s best at the 2008 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival? The verdict will be out soon, as the awards unfold at 7pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Earlier on, a very unofficial survey among showbiz writers on best actor, best director and best picture was going around through text messaging. Movie scribe Mell Navarro was circulating a question along this line. He omitted the best actress category in the poll, since he presumed Mylene Dizon would get the trophy for her performance in director Chris Martinez’s "100," a move about a list of 100 things a cancer-stricken victim must do before she dies. But many among the respondents said Meryll Soriano might pull a surprise as a pianist who plays to reconcile two warring camps, the Japanese soldiers and the Filipino guerillas, during the tail-end of World War II, in Paul Alexander Morales’ "Concerto." Noteworthy is the prevalence of outstanding entries in the main competition of the fourth Cinemalaya. According to Director Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, whose film "Boses" elicited a positive reaction from the audience, there are a lot of excellent films in the competition. "Hindi tayo nauubusan ng magagandang pelikula," she said. She does not expect to win an award tonight. "Ang makasama ako sa competition is already a prize," she said. Morales also does not expect to win. He said the appreciation people have given his movie is enough encouragement. "Salamat sa lahat ng magagandang reactions. Pero marami pa ring pressures," he said. Morales said there are a lot of expenses to be recovered in the course of making his film. "Ito talaga ang problema ng independent filmmaking. Pero we never say die," said the neophyte filmmaker. Meanwhile, newcomer Yna Asistio, who portrays the sister of Soriano in "Concerto", is content with the opportunity to tackle a challenging role in a digital film. "Kauna-unahan ko po ito and I enjoyed doing it. Kahit walang award, okey lang," said the daughter of Nadia Montenegro and ex-Caloocan Mayor Macario "Boy" Asistio. Who among the artists in the ten official entries in the major category of full-length feature will bring home the bacon? The movies are "100" by Chris Martinez; "Baby Angelo" by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino; "Boses" by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil; "Brutus" by Tara Illenberger; "Concerto" by Paul Morales; "Huling Pasada" by Paul Sta. Ana; "Jay" by Francis Xavier Pasion; "May Fake American Accent" by Onnah Valera, "Namets" by Emilio "Jay" Abello and "Ranchero" by Michael Christian Cardoz. In the short film category, who will shine among "Andong" by Rommel Tolentino; "Ang Ibang Mga Pamilya" by Joel Ruiz; "Angan-Angan (Dreams" by Sheron Dayoc; "Diamante sa Langit" by Vic Acedillo, Jr.; "God Only Knows" by Mark Reyes; "Huling Biktima" by Vitaliano Rave; "My Pet" by Anna Bigornia; "Panggaris" by Dexter B. Cayanes; "Trails of Water" by Sheron Dayoc and "Tutos" by L.A. Yamsuan?
