| Will Sarah Geronimo be the next box-office sensation? |

That’s what my friends in the tabloid dailies tell me, and that the buzz over the new Star Cinema movie is so loud that they can already hear the words “box-office hit” or “blockbuster” being spoken like a mantra in the corridors of Star Cinema. I hope it really becomes a hit, because I feel Sarah Geronimo deserves something more than a 15-minute exposure every week on Asap along with her fellow “champions” from amateur singing contests on television. This girl from Manila’s blighted district of Sta. Cruz has been transformed (through years of constantly performing out of town and overseas) into a professional entertainer, is nearing superstar status and yet has kept her feet on the ground. Very few in the business are like Sarah who has never forgotten how and where she started, and the people who have been very supportive of her. So, the girl needs a real big break, and A Very Special Love! is it. In the movie, Sarah plays a character her age. She falls in love with a man slightly older than she is. As in the archetypal Filipino romantic movies, the stations in life of the two characters are at the opposite ends of the economic pole. He is wealthy, she is not. And this is what makes Filipino movie audiences (women in particular) go gaga over movies like A Very Special Love! and Star Cinema is so willing to give this kind of fare to them. The movie is opening today, and the past week, we’ve seen John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo doing their share of the promotions on television. Excitement was all over Sarah’s face, and anticipation was etched on John Lloyd’s eyes, perhaps due to the fact that Sarah is the bigger star between the two of them. After all, she has proven it at the Araneta Coliseum many times over, and in the sales of her album.
