The YCC Film Desk announced the winners Saturday morning, in recognition of the outstanding performances among local movies in 2007. YCC is the academic-based critics group established in 1990 with members coming from various disciplines. Through the years, they have become attentive observers of Philippine cinema, constantly bringing into the analysis of film an interdisciplinary approach. Abalos bested Cherry Pie Picache and Eugene Domingo of “Foster Child” of Seiko Films and and Ron Capinding, lead actor of “Still Life” of Sining Ko Ito Productions. Meanwhile, “Foster Child,” about an urban poor family that makes a living by renting out a temporary home for abandoned babies pending their adoption, won awards for Best Film and Best Screenplay. Brillante Mendoza won Best Director for his work. “Nagpapalasamat ako sa Young Critics Circle. Akala ng iba ay wala nang pag-asa ang ‘Foster Child’ na manalo sa local awards. Pero may mga well-meaning people pa rin na nagpapatotoo sa mga trabaho ko,” said Mendoza . “Foster Child” has been circulating around the globe in various film festivals. “Nakapagtataka nga na rito sa atin, hindi ito nare-recognize (ang "Foster Child") until Young Critics Circle gave this an approval rating. Nakakataba talaga ng puso,” added the young filmmaker. Best Cinematography and Visual Design went to Lav Diaz’s nine-hour digipic, “Death in the Land of Encantos ” (Sine Olivia). The dramatic film won for the only category for which it was nominated, beating “Foster Child,” “Still Life” and “Tirador” (Centerstage Productions) . The last—another megger from Mendoza —with strong nominations for three technical categories, completed the elite roster of limited titles to figure in this year’s derby. The awards rites will be held on August 7, 1-5pm at the Pulungang Recto, Bulwagang Rizal (formerly Faculty Center), College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman, Quezon City. It is open to the public. The following is the roundup of complete winners and nominees for this year’s YCC film awards, officially billed as the 18th Annual Circle Citations.
