Guiao hopes to find cure in RP 5's shooting woes

powerade-team-pilipinas03.jpgShoot, shoot and shoot. After their worst offensive game in the 25th FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship, shooting drills occupied the Nationals’ one hour practice Sunday, less than 24 hours after suffering their first loss against Korea, 69-56.

James Yap and Willie Miller went hard against themselves in the light of their combined 3-of-18 shooting from the floor Saturday night.

Yap shot an atrocious 2-of-9 from the field while Miller was even worse, going 1-of-9 as they both finished with four points each.

All in all, the Nationals went 23-of-77 (30 percent).

“Hindi ko nga rin maipaliwanag. Nagkasabay-sabay na malas,” said Miller while attending a lunch hosted by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios and the entire board of governors under chairman Lito Alvarez.

“Yung mga open shots ko hindi pumapasok. Maski nga ‘yung paborito kong tira wala pa rin, e” said Miller, flashing that same charismatic smile.

Yap admitted going through a shooting funk, but stressed it was not only him but the entire team as well.

“Actually hindi lang naman ako, lahat kami nag-struggle talaga,” said the Purefoods star. “Kaya sana makapag-adjust kami (against Chinese-Taipei).”

“Tinignan namin ‘yung stats, off talaga lahat. Kung pumasok lang ‘yung ibang tira namin, baka naging iba `yung complexion ng game.”

Despite their woeful shooting, coach Yeng Guiao said the team’s morale remains in high spirit.

“After practice kanina, pinag-uusapan namin ‘yung numbers, sa lahat ng department dito (except field goal shooting) panalo tayo. So I told them don’t be discouraged,” Guiao said.
