Gibo, Noynoy vow clean, honest polls

MANILA, Philippines – Administration Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro and Liberal Party (LP) presidential bet Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III joined other presidential aspirants who have forged a peace covenant for clean, honest and orderly elections next year.

Teodoro and Aquino, who are cousins, took the pledge at television network GMA-7 in the presence of Commission on Elections Commissioner Ferdinand Rafanan on behalf of Comelec Chairman Jose Melo.

GMA-7 is spearheading a campaign for free and honest elections through its program “Election 2010 Na, Tatakbo Ka Ba.”

Eleven presidential bets earlier participated in the network’s fun run at the Global City in Taguig where they entered into a covenant to fight electoral fraud and exert all efforts to promote clean and honest elections in 2010.

Among those in the GMA-7 fun-run were former President Joseph Estrada, Senators Manuel Villar, Mar Roxas, Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, Richard Gordon, Jamby Madrigal, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Jesus is Lord leader Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Bayani Fernando, environmentalist Nicanor Perlas and Ang Kapatiran Party leader John Carlos de los Reyes.

Escudero, Legarda and Binay have dropped out from the presidential race, with Legarda and Binay now running for vice president.

The 11 signed a prepared oath before Comelec chair Melo where they vowed not to use their power and influence to ensure victory in the elections.

They also pledged not to use public funds or state property for their personal interest.

Teodoro and Aquino also took the same pledge and signed the same agreement for clean and honest elections yesterday before Rafanan.

In an earlier interview, Teodoro said that he expects next year’s elections to be conducted on the highest professional level by all candidates.

He also vowed that he would abide by the rules, and expects other candidates to do the same.

“The election should not be personal, but rather debates and issues should be based on party platforms,” said Teodoro.

Teodoro will be proclaimed tomorrow as the Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential standard-bearer, along with his running mate actor Edu Manzano, at the party’s national convention.
