Palatial halls and music piracy

Last May, the President witnessed the inauguration of the barangay hall of Valenzuela City's Barangay Maysan. The building is a three-story structure standing on a more than 2,400 square meter lot making it the biggest barangay hall in the country. Roughly around 27 million pesos was spent for this office. Ironically, the grandeur of the palatial building does not reflect the lives of the residents. Barangay Maysan is on the list of waterless areas in the country. Their problem does not end here. They also complain of other services that are undelivered to them. Sadly, there are similar situations in other places where grandiose barangay halls seemingly mock the pitiful lives of residents.

Every year, billions of pesos are lost due to piracy. While the public's attention is mainly focused on movie piracy, the situation of music piracy is just as alarming. According to the Philippine Association of the Record Industry Incorporated, the industry used to earn 2 billion pesos each year in sales. But the numbers have long gone down. Other recording companies have closed because of heavy losses. Are authorities doing enough to end piracy and save the music industry?

Nitong Mayo, isang mala-palasyong barangay hall ang pinasinayaan ng Pangulo sa Barangay Maysan, Valenzuela City. Sa taas na tatlong palapag at sumasakop sa mahigit 2,400 square meters, ito ang pinakamalaking barangay hall sa bansa. Ang halagang ginastos, tumataginting na P27 million. Pero kung anong rangya ng opisina ng barangay, siya namang payak ng buhay ng mga residente rito. Isa sa "waterless areas" ang Barangay Maysan. Pila-balde at umaasa sa rasyon ng tubig ang mga tao. Bukod sa problema sa tubig, may ilan pang idinaraing ang mga residente. Sa iba pang lugar, may katulad ding kuwento. Magarbo raw ang barangay hall pero ang ilang pangunahing serbisyo, tila nalimutan.

Kada taon, bilyon-bilyong piso ang nawawala sa bansa dahil sa piracy. Habang nakatuon ang atensyon ng publiko sa pagpirata ng mga pelikula, nakababahala na rin ang kalagayan ng music piracy. Ayon sa Philippine Association of the Record Industry, Incorporated, halos dalawang bilyong piso ang kinikita ng music industry noon bawat taon pero malaki ang ibinaba nito dahil sa pamimirata. Ang ilan sa mga recording company, napilitan nang magsara dahil sa pagkalugi. May ginagawa ba ang mga kinauukulan para sugpuin ang problema at maisalba ang industriya ng musika?
