Pinoys in HK to stage protests over ‘racist’ article

The Filipino community in Hong Kong will launch street protests starting Sunday in light of a columnist’s branding of the Philippines as a "nation of servants," a Filipino envoy said on Tuesday.

Romulo Salud, labor attache of the Philippine consulate general in Hong Kong, said in an interview over radio dzBB that the Filipino community has decided to openly express their outrage at columnist Chip Tsao’s "The War at Home" piece published in HK Magazine last March 27.

The piece called the Philippines unworthy of claiming the Spratly Islands from China because the former is a "nation of servants."

"Ayon sa pagpupulong na nangyari ang ating leaders ng Filipino community naghahanda na ng kilos protesta [According to the meeting of leaders of the Filipino community, they are now preparing street protests]," Salud said, adding that the protests will probably be held at Hong Kong’s central district.

Filipinos in Hong Kong will push through with the protest despite the apology from HK Mag publisher Asia City Publishing House for the commentary, the diplomat said, adding that Filipinos want Tsao himself to apologize.

"Ang pakiramadam ng ating mag kababayan dito kelangan mag-apologize mismo ang sumulat dito, si Chip Tsao [The sentiment of our countrymen here is that the one who wrote the article, Chip Tsao, should apologize]," said Salud.

On Monday, Asia City Publishing House issued an apology for "any offense" caused by Chip Tsao’s article but defended the column as satirical, saying it could be read "in different ways."

Salud said there is a need for the Philippines to show their opposition to such depictions of Filipinos, as letting such an incident pass may give the impression that Filipinos let themselves get trampled upon.

Chip Tsao’s column sparked outrage among non-government organizations and lawmakers in the Philippines, with Parañaque City Rep. Roilo Golez even calling for a boycott of Hong Kong and Hong Kong products over the incident for a period between six months to one year.
