San Sebastian tops Bar exam
Judy Lardizabal of San Sebastian College topped the 2008 Bar examination held over four Sundays last September, according to results released last night.
The 108th Bar exam had 1,310 successful examinees with a passing rate of 20.58 percent, lower than last year’s 22.91 percent. A record 6,364 examinees from 109 law schools took the test.
Lardizabal, valedictorian of SSC law school who got her bachelor’s degree in social work at UP Diliman, got a score of 85.70 percent, followed by Mylene Amerol Macumbal of Mindanao State University with 85.65. Third was Oliver Baclay Jr. of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) with 85.6.
In her application form at SSC, Lardizabal said she intended to specialize in labor law because “most of the injustices in the Philippines are committed against our very vulnerable workforce.”
The rest of the top ten were: Majesty Eve Jala of Ateneo (85.50); Ma. Elizabeth Lizeralde of the University of the Philippines (85.40); Michael Macapagal also of UP (84.15); Denisse Dy and April Love Regis both from ADMU tied at seventh place (84.00); Kristine Joy Tan of ADMU (83.80); Shirley Velasquez of UP and Gian Jacob of San Beda tied at ninth (83.75), and Vanessa Raymundo of San Beda Collage (83.70).
Chief Justice Reynato Puno did not take part in the special session of the SC for decoding of the exam results because his nephew, Charles Puno, was among the examinees.
Under the Rules of Court, a bar examinee is deemed to have passed if he obtains a general average of 75 percent in all subjects without falling below 50 percent in any subject.
The subjects and their corresponding weights are as follows: Remedial Law, 20 percent; Political and International Law, 15 percent; Mercantile Law, 15 percent; Civil Law, 15 percent; Labor and Social Legislation, 10 percent; Taxation, 10 percent; Criminal Law, 10 percent; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5 percent.
Associate Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura will head the next bar examination committee.
