MANILA – David Noel again took charge as he led Barangay Ginebra to a 106-98 win over San Miguel Beer in Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead of the 2008-09 Motolite-PPBA Fiesta Conference finals Monday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Noel shot a game-high 29 points, 13 of which came in the final quarter when the Kings pulled away again after the Beermen managed to tie the game. The Beermen were down by as much as 18 points early in the second half.
Noel’s heroics came right after he missed three crucial free throws in Game Four that could have given the win and the title to Ginebra.
“David is a known competitor and he made it up today,” said Ginebra mentor Jong Uichico. Barangay Ginebra also drew another solid game from Eric Menk off the bench with 18 points.
“It’s nice to bounce back from a loss and have a 3-2 lead. We’ll just try to play better next game because for sure San Miguel will give their all in the next game,” Uichico added.
Chico Lanete also contributed big for the Kings with 14 points in 15 minutes. He was also the spark when they built their biggest lead in the game at 60-42 with 10:46 left in the third quarter.
The Beermen however went on a 17-5 exchange to slice Ginebra’s 14-point lead to just 68-71 entering the fourth canto.
The Beermen even tied the game at 72-all on Mick Penni’s’ free throw. Noel and Menk teamed up however for 13-1 run capped by the import’s three-pointer to push the lead back to 85-73 with 6:05 left in the game.
After Menk split his free throws for a 91-77 advantage, San Miguel again tried to get back in the game and unloaded a swift 9-0 run to threaten at 86-91 with 3:59 left.
Menk then scored the next four points but Noel sealed the win for the defending champion with a three-point play off the sixth and final foul of Gabe Freeman.
Ronald Tubid also chipped in 14 markers for the Kings while Jayjay Helterbrand, who was a doubtful starter prior to the start of the game, had nine points in 32 minutes of playtime.
Miek Cortez meanwhile led the Beermen with 23 points while Freeman was held down to just 16 to tie his output in the series opener. Danny Ildefonso added 14 for coach Siot Tanquingcen.
Anthony Washington was limited to just six markers on 3-of-8 shooting from the field. He was averaging 16.8 points per game in the series.
“Everybody goes through a slump,” said Tanquingcen. “But we’re okay. we just have to get that one game to stay in the series.”
Willy Wilson, who started for the first time in the series, helped in containing Washington in the game, aside from contributing eight points and six rebounds in 28 minutes.
