THE TWO CUBAN BOXING COACHES heavily counted upon to help produce a first ever Olympic gold medesday
THE TWO CUBAN BOXING COACHES heavily counted upon to help produce a first ever Olympic gold medal for the country are set to arrive Wednesday.
Commissioner Eric Loretizo of the Philippine Sports Commission said Juan Enriquez Steyners Tissert and Badoberto Rojas Scott were hired to boost the training program of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.
If plans push through, the coaches will be in the corner of a handful of Filipino Olympic aspirants in the third and last qualifying event in Kazakhstan next month.
The country only has light flyweight Harry Tañamor as qualifier for the Beijing Olympics this August.
Tissert, 57, served as Cuban national team coach from 1994 to 2002. He is a product of the Provincial Boxing Academy and served as coach for Spain from 1992 to 1994.
Scott, 41, served as coach for the High Performance National Center of Cuba and was credited for Cuba’s successful stints in two World Championships.
Raul Fernandez Liranza, another noted Cuban coach, was responsible for Onyok Velasco’s silver medal finish in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
PSC chair Butch Ramirez went to Cuba to look for Cuban coaches along with Abap president Manny Lopez after watching the Bangkok qualifying early this month where all five Filipino aspirants failed to secure Olympic slots.
Loretizo, speaking during Friday’s Scoop sa Kamayan, added that Ramirez has some good news from Los Angeles where some Olympic-bound Filipino athletes are expected to train, but he did not mention what.
